Historic Berrima – A Timeless Romance
A pair of platypus’s frolic in the Wingecarribee River as the early morning sun peeks over the majestic English pine and oak trees of Historic Berrima.The aroma of coffee drifts through the main street to wake and tempt the early morning visitors and residents as they casually meander and explore the bygone days of this postcard town. Australia’s oldest and best preserved Georgian architectural town, Berrima has been a major meeting place between Sydney and Melbourne since its establishment in 1830, popularly known as the ‘Romantic’ era. Located 2 hours south of Sydney and a halfway point on route to Canberra, this small village of approximately 700 passionate ‘Berrima-ites’ is the Southern Highlands ‘jewel in the crown’ tourism hotspot. Surrounded by unique boutiques, antiques, art galleries and gourmet eating and drinking spots the town is a place to slow down and breathe in the cool crisp country air.

Embrace the striking sandstone columned Courthouse, where you can have some fun and dress up in colonial costumes and immerse yourself in Australia’s first Trial by Jury murder case against lovers Dunkley and Beech or take a haunted Ghost Tour experience after-dark.
Step back in time at Harpers Mansion where you can also unravel your way through its Maze overlooking the picturesque village. Berrima’s past is best showcased at the Museum where you will be surprised to learn that the towns Gaol and River banks were home to WW1 German Internees.
To maintain your energy levels and satisfy retail therapy urges, the town offers boutique shopping and cuisine solutions that can be combined with unique heritage venues such as a local ale beside the roaring fireplace at Australia’s oldest licenced pub, the Surveyor General Inn, to hatted restaurants and cafes serving seasonal paddock to plate experiences, to local cool climate wineries of Pepper Green and Bendooley Estate, jam shops full of delicacies, stocking locally grown goodies as well as take home treats and even lollies for the big kids at Lolly Swagman.
